I mixed my dyes this morning to start the painting. The dyes I use are Procion fiber reactive dyes…I buy mine from Dharma. To thicken the dyes for painting with no bleeding I use sodium alginate blended with urea and distilled water. I am using Pimatex PFD cotton for the fabric.

I don’t mix the soda ash (dye activator) until I’m ready to paint each color as it starts to exhaust as soon as it combines with the dye.

The skin painted…to get this tone I combined 3 dye colors starting with misty rose and adding just a touch of peach and chamois

Hair and eyebrows…the darker is truffle brown; the lighter is dark brown

lips and nails…Chinese red

pupils…black #39

irises…turquoise

bodice and skirt…turquoise

and done for the day…covered with vinyl to keep the dyes wet overnight to “batch”

Not a bad day’s work… She is going to look wonderful on Vicki’s “twilight” gradient that I used to piece the background for this quilt!
